Purdue University athletes are known as Purdue Boilermakers. Used by a rival college as an insult, the students and the school adopted the nickname, and has been the official name for the students and athletes for more than a century. Their mascot is a steam locomotive called Boilermaker Special while Purdue Pete performs duties in athletic competitions.
