For a short period of time in the 70s and 80s, Rolex manufactured timepieces featuring exotic materials including dials made from a variety of minerals, woods, and stones.  Burlwood, Black Onyx, African Mahogany, Lapis Lazuli, and Birch were all used for dials during this time. Most commonly these watches were produced in 18K yellow gold. These variants are always strikingly vivid with high contrast and minimalist design. Because these exotic dials were only in production for a short time, they have always been highly collectible. Good examples of these original references are becoming increasingly difficult to find. 

This specific 1987 Day-Date ref 18038 is absolutely stunning and would make a great addition to an existing collection or as a stand-alone watch that is strikingly different and employs the use of mixed natural materials. This rare Day-Date is sure to be a stand out among the executive crowd and will always remain sought after.

CASE & BRACELET

The 18k yellow gold case is strong and in excellent condition, appearing to have been very lightly polished in the past and showing some light signs of use. The 18k yellow gold fluted bezel is in wonderful condition showing very little signs of use. The 18k yellow gold Rolex President bracelet with 55 end pieces is in superb condition retaining 21 links and showing very little stretch.

DIAL & HANDS

The beautiful and original burlwood exotic dial is rich in color with excellent natural grain. The dial itself remains flawless, without signs of delamination or cracking. The tritium filled hands have taken on a nice ivory coloration and show no degradation under U.V. light inspection. The metallic gold date wheel is era correct with open 6' and 9's.

None. The watch was recently serviced and is running at COSC spec. The watch will come with a one year warranty on accurate timekeeping.
